Virginia, Kings Dominion, and DC

I know it has been forever since my last post but that is because I have been out of town for most of it. Last Friday (the sixth) I left for Virginia with my girlfriend Erin, and two other friends Richie and Holly. We were staying with Erin's family for the week. We took our time getting up there and after a fourteen hour trip with a stop for breakfast, lunch, and a stretch break in the afternoon we got there for dinner. It was a long trip but the visit was well worth it. The next day (Saturday) we spent just resting and visiting with Erin's family.

Sunday we went to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington with Erin's family. We toured the plantation and had a tour of the house. The house was beautiful and it was so cool to learn so much about our first president and everything about him. there were history interpreters that were dressed in period clothing and were able to tell all about the things the workers there did. It was a fantastic experience and I would recommend that if you ever get the chance to go there take it! I even got to take a picture (even though I wasn't supposed to) of George Washington's Fake teeth!

On Monday The four of us went to Kings Dominion and rode rides ALL day long. we were so beat by the end of the day, and so hungry but we found a Chick-fil-a and it was great!

The next day was the day we went into DC! We started off the morning with the Museum of Natural History. It was so cool. I got to see the Famous Elephant in the Rotunda, I held a human femur. There were so many cool things in this building! Mummies, Dinosaurs, real human bones, an exhibit on native Americans, and many others! We continued the day by visiting the National Air and Space Museum. This was a lot of fun but I feel like we rushed through this building. TONS of things to see. A few of my favorites from this building were: The Spirit of St Louis, Amelia Earhart's plane, and the Exhibit with Pictures of several planets. The whole museum was great! I would love to go back and spend more time there. But we moved on to see the National World War two Memorial. It was the highlight of the sites of the day for me! We got an un-official tour from a park ranger that told us all about the significance of the monument and the little details that would otherwise be overlooked. So I thought it was great! Then we walked through the Korean Memorial and past the Lincoln Memorial. After our memorials we started walking for the Iwo Jima memorial. It was quite a hike but we made it. All the way across the Potomac River. The reason we went to the Iwo Jima Memorial is because there is a parade of the Marine Corp Drum and Bugal Corp and Silent Drill team! The band was great and the silent Drill team was pretty cool too!

The next day was pretty calm. We hung out and went to the pool and just relaxed again. We watched a movie and Some home videos of erin and her family. The next day the trip back took almost two hours less then the trip up and seemed so much more fun and less tedious. All in all the trip was GREAT! I will put up some pictures tomorrow!

Rehearsal

I am currently in a production of "Into the Woods" It is a musical. I am playing the role of the Steward. It is a small role but I have always loved being in musicals. We have been rehearsing almost every night for the past eight or nine weeks. I am very excited about the show (we are performing next tuesday through thursday at the American Village in Montevallo AL), we have had a lot of fun rehearsing all of the crazy songs and the little bit of choreography that is involved.
This is a few of our cast members doing a dance during the opening!
The Two Princes in the show! I think the Costumes look Great! Good job Mrs. Walker!!

Richie Taking a break and Chowing down on a cupcake from Crazy Lady Cakes! (My Mom's Cake Shop!)

This is Brandi and Michael. They are both in the show and Brandi did all the choreography and Michael Built the whole set, which looks fantastic!

If you know much about Musical Theater you know that is takes a lot of work to put these shows on. If any of you are interested in coming to see it Tickets are ten dollars and the shows are at seven thirty in the evening.

This is a picture of the poster for the show.

Wake Surfing

Well I guess this week's obsession is wake surfing. The Past two days I spent in Guntersville Alabama with my girlfriend and some of her extended family. Her uncle has a new boat and they introduced me to wake surfing. The basic idea is to get onto a surf board being pulled behind the boat (with a very short rope), get outside the wake, and "surf" along the wake. Now lots of people who know what they are doing are able to throw the rope into the boat and continue to ride. None of us were able to do it this weekend but we had a lot of fun trying!

Another Water sport we did a little these past few days was wakeboarding. Wake boarding is when your feet are strapped into a board and you are pulled behind a boat. Once you get familiar with riding you can start doing some jumps, grabs, and eventually some spins and flips. I have been wake boarding for about ten years now and I can still only do some jumps and a twist or two.

Like most unique sports this is not a cheap sport to get started in. The cheapest wakesurf board I found ran about $250. And wakeboards usually run you a few hundred as well.

I feel like I have started this blog at a most unfortunate time. I say this because over the past few weeks I have done several things that would be very good articles for the blog. I fully expect to have more fun times like this but I want to tell a little of these past things.

The first is that I have been involved with a production of the play Into the Woods written by Stephen Sondheim. It is a musical that was first performed on Broadway in 1987. It is a fairy tail that includes such characters as Jack (from Jack and the beanstalk), Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Ridinghood and many others. It has been a very fun show! The performances are July 27th through the 29th. It should be very good.

Another unique thing that I did was a hiking trip that I went on with my friend Henry and his brother Philip. We went to Bankhead National Forest . There were tons of hiking trails. Mountain biking trails, and plenty to do outside! We hiked about about 14 miles around Alabama Hiking trail number 204. we also took some time to do some climbing along the way. It was quite an experience. If you are ever looking for a rustic camping trip, day hiking trip or an awesome place to do some rock climbing this is the place!

Okay so I will only talk about two more of the fun things that have happened lately. The first is when I decided to cook last Wednesday. While I was at work I decided that it would be fun to cook some food for myself, my girlfriend, and a few others. So I went to Publix and looked around. I finally decided that the best thing to cook would be the New York strip steaks, Fresh Corn on the Cob and some Potatoes. I grilled the steaks and the potatoes and boiled the corn. It ended up being a wonderful meal with great friends.

But the thing that has definitely been my obsession of this week is a new game that I have played four rounds of since being introduced to on Saturday. This game is called Quelf, it is a game that you have to complete tasks to move forward and you must obey your cards. Sometimes this will have you stuffing a box into your shirt and at others you will be singing a love song to your card. It is a great game to play with close friends or family! It is a weekly obsession in my book!

First of many.... I hope

Obsession: the domination of one's thoughts or feelings by a persistent idea, image, desire, etc.

The Weekly Obsession is a place where I can share my adventures with anyone that wishes to hear. I hope that my posts will be interesting and that I will use the correct grammar and structure and all that Jazz(because if I don't my sisters will be all over me about it).

I don't promise that there will be a new obsession every week but I do promise that there will be random obsessions that I take way too far and then forget about soon after.

For any of you that decide to read please enjoy!
